Prague’s streets change as dusk falls. The new travelling light installation Where are you heading? uses GOBO lamps to project questions onto the pavements, inviting people passing by to stop and think. The first lamps were lit in the Řepy housing estate and at the Nádraží Modřany bus stop, and they are gradually appearing in other places in Prague.
The name GOes Before Optics refers to the principle of light projections—a simple pattern through a template comes to life on city sidewalks and transforms them into unexpected galleries. The lamps do not impose answers, but open up space for reflection and sharing of thoughts and emotions. GOBO lamps illuminate more than just the streets, but also our inner light. The installation functions as a physical and symbolic signpost, reminding us that moving through the city is not just a daily routine. It is also an opportunity to stop, take a breath, and realize where we are actually going.
The project is based on a long-term effort to transform places that people normally rush past into spaces for stopping, meeting, and reflection. Since 2024, the installation has gradually entered various corners of the city: Modřany Railway Station, Sídliště Řepy (2024); Stromovka, Nemocnice Motol, Příběnická Street (footpath to Vítkov) and Zítkovy sady (2025). In each environment, it has taken on a new context and meaning, from housing estates to park greenery to the historic center.
The project was made possible thanks to the support of city districts. In 2024, it was Prague 18 and Prague 12. In 2025, it is Prague 7, Prague 5, Prague 3, and Prague 2.
